Thea (she/her) is my friend who is so deeply fun and real; I aspire to have her ability to fill a room with her honest presence. Oftentimes when someone is described as being a “fun” friend, the complement ends there, as if their social performability is the natural end of their abilities, but Thea is much more than that; she's a deep thinker and talented creative. She’s lived all over the world; conceived in New York, born in Nicaragua, then moved to Guatemala, Columbia, Cuba, and Brussels before ending up in London. Her work explores identity and place, examining her multicultural background and its implications in social, political, and interpersonal contexts. She investigates complex themes with her work and engages those around her in meaningful conversations while sharing her true opinions - I admire so much about her.
The Outfit
When I asked her to describe her outfit in 3 words, she said: Sexy, Simple, and Effective. Everything she wears is just to support the main act: her jewelry. She feels the most herself when she has her jewelry on. In this look alone she brought in beautiful bold rings, earrings, and repurposed a necklace as a belly chain.
The Dressing
Her mother would make a garlic and basil infused olive oil throughout Thea’s life and pour it onto plates of sliced tomatoes and capers (A la Mama as Thea calls it). Thea acknowledges that the recipe itself is simple, but feels that her mother showed her love through its thoughtful preparation. “It’s an act of love that you do for someone without pointing out that you did it for them - it’s unseen but felt” she told me. I realized looking back that this is the connection between her clothing taste and dressing taste; the detail and thought that goes into making something like the dressing her mother made runs parallel to her love of jewelry - it’s something small but intentional that leaves a lasting impression. A little extra attention that adds so much value, and in Thea’s eyes, makes her feel seen, and ultimately, loved.
